Members of Beth Israel Congregation are opening their doors to their neighbors, Jewish and non-Jewish alike, to teach them how to make challah, the delicious braided bread that is one of the highlights of Shabbat and the High Holidays.
This fund-raiser will help the tiny, 92-year-old synagogue — the only one left in Columbia and Montour counties — keep its eternal light burning.
Participants will also learn about the symbolic meaning of the bread and its role in the Jewish story.
Afterward, we'll enjoy a homemade meal of traditional Jewish foods, including matzoh ball soup, salad, apple cake, and of course, fresh-baked challah with honey.
Participants will each get to take home the loaf they make.
And this year, we're adding a new, optional twist - how to make chocolate challah, an invention by one of our members!
We have two sessions, each limited to 12 students. We also have a waiting list, in case someone cancels. How do you get on the waiting list? Send an email to Susan Schwartz at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Tickets are non-refundable unless a replacement participant is available - but we'll do our best to find a replacement student for you!
Can't afford the fee? Contact Treasurer Susan Schwartz at 570-441-2774. We will be offering some scholarships. You can also call if you want to participate but don't feel comfortable paying for tickets online.
